Fishing Report (Updated 3.6.2009)

Water levels in both lakes are up to traditional spring levels above 74 feet.

Catfish: Fair.  In both lakes the catfish bite has been inconsistent, with fish feeding well some days and other days being a little slower.  After a prolonged period of low water temperatures the catfish’s metabolism will inevitably slow and they will feed less, but Captain Jim Glenn reports that they can still be caught by anglers willing to move from deep to shallow water depending on the location of the fish.  Try drifting gizzard shad chunks or anchoring with cut baits, and don’t be afraid to look shallow.

Crappie: Fair.  With the cold water crappie fishing has dropped off, and fish remain in a winter pattern.  Fish are not in the deep brush but instead are moving along the ledges and creek channels.

Largemouth bass: Fair.  Water temperatures remain very cold, and Captain Inky Davis reports that the very first spawning will not begin until water temperatures hit 60 degrees.  Look for fish to be staging offshore of spawning spots and holding to cover; deep water with access to shallow water is a prime location.  Crankbaits worked very slowly may be productive.

DHEC fish advisories: Largemouth bass and bowfin (mudfish) should only be eaten once per week.
