Fishing Report (Updated 2.4.2010) Lake Thurmond is up to 329. Striped and Hybrid Bass: Good. Guide Wendell Wilson (706-283-3336) reports that from daylight until about 9 or 10 am the striper action has been pretty good below the Russell Dam. Free line live herring or cast bucktails into the current. The Clark’s Hill Herring Hut (864-333-2000) reports that the area around the dam is loaded with bait, and hybrids and striper are moving down the river in that direction. Those migrating fish are still about mid-lake but should get to the dam in the next couple of weeks. Fish down lined live herring off extended points with contour changes in about 50-60 feet of water. The smaller fish are down about 24 feet, and the bigger ones are down about 40 feet. Crappie: Fair. Guide Rod Wall (864-993-8868) reports that fish are suspended 15-25 feet down over 25-30 feet of water, and the males are starting to move into the creeks. The females will follow them in a week or two, depending on weather conditions. With the slow bite plain minnows seem to be working best, and the fish are not around brush. Black bass: Slow. Captain Dale Gibbs (706-288-7510) reports that the bass bite continues to be very slow. Try a mop jig or lead headed fluke in deeper ditches that hold bait and have warmer water. The Herring Hut reports that the current from all having all seven gates open is still too strong to fish below the Savannah River Dam. Once the current slows fish in ditches 14-17 feet deep that run parallel to the main channel where there are good numbers of yellow perch (use minnows) and bream (use worms) as well as some crappie. DHEC Fish Advisory: Only one meal per week of largemouth bass. For most recent information about Lake Thurmond fishing click here.
