CLAIRE WESSINGER WINS MSC LADY ANGLER TOURNAMENT AND CATCHES THE BIGGEST FISH OF THE EVENTMidland Striper Club's annual 2009 Lady Angler tournament was held Saturday, September 26th out of Jakes Landing on Lake Murray. The weather was a little chilly and overcast, but the fish were biting. Eight lady anglers weighed in twelve fish in the half-day outing. Each angler was limited to two fish at weigh-in. MSC club members were fishing guides for the event.
Claire Wessinger of Newberry finished in first place with two fish weighing 29 lbs. 3 ozs. Claire, a MSC Lady Angler tournament winner in previous years, also landed the event’s largest striped bass, a 15 lb. 14 oz. fish to take the Big Fish trophy home as well. Claire fished with husband Townsend Wessinger.
Second place went to Madison Plaxco of Rock Hill, with two stripers weighing 9 lbs. 15 ozs. Madison fished with MSC member Jerry Broughton of Rock Hill. The 3rd place trophy went to Christy Mulligan of Columbia for her two fish weighing 9 lbs. 3 ozs.
MSC members Jim and Elizabeth Gibbs were tournament organizers for the event and even donated use of their boat so a young lady angler could catch her first striped bass. Member Charles Fortner of Irmo cooked burgers and hot dogs for the crowd and “Santee” Carl Thompson of Santee provided music and general assistance for the festivities.
Midlands Striper Club, founded in 1979, is celebrating its 30th year and is one of the oldest striped bass fishing organizations in the country. Since 2001, the club’s nearly 200 members have donated over $36,000 to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources for striped bass research and stock enhancements in the Palmetto State.
